Richmond International Raceway first opened in 1946 as a dirt track circuit, however in 1988 the oval was created as a ½ mile configuration. In the same year the track was extended into its current ¾ mile D shaped oval venue with banking of up to 14 degrees on the turns. The back straight is 860 feet long providing plenty of entertainment for up to 86,830 spectators, and with two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event weekends being held here every year, there's always plenty of action! Having sold out for over 30 consecutive Sprint Cup series events, it can only be expected to have one of the best atmospheres a motorsport venue can offer. It is also unique in the sense that every race at the Raceway is held at night under floodlights providing drivers with a new challenge.
