Indianapolis is possibly the most famous race circuit in the USA, hosting the Indy 500 and the Brickyard 400. Today the circuit has the largest seating capacity of any sporting venue in the world, with unofficial figures looking at around 250,000 – 300,000. Known by fans as Indy, it dates back to 1909 when it opened its doors as a motorbike circuit. The first 500 mile car race took place 2 years later in 1911. The circuit today has two main layouts, the Indy circuit and the infield circuit which used to host Formula 1 and is now used for MotoGP. Without a doubt the biggest event on the calendar is the Indy 500 – the 500 mile Indycar race that takes place in May each year. It's an epic race which sees a huge spectator turn out each year.
